The collage aspect of assignment 2 really intrigues me. One artist that I follow that does this sort of work is Renee Mathews. (http://reneemathews.format.com) She sometimes makes it hard to tell if her pieces are digital collages or actual handmade collages photographed after the fact.
This image of hers made me solidify my idea of wanting to do some sort of celebration of black women and their hair. An ode to Black History Month ending and Women’s History Month beginning in March. I have a lot of beauty magazines and I will also look up some iconic hair moments from the last few years to cut out and manipulate.. I want to have a minimal color palette: browns, reds, black…
Im not exactly sure just yet how exactly I am going to capture the 3D aspect in a way that looks completely 2D so that will be my main task of what I keep in mind while constructing and photographing.
RESULTS
One challenge I faced during photographing this set was the background that I chose. I noticed that it wasn’t really showing off as a flat image like I had imagined it would have but overall I am happy about how it turned out, especially the middle image.
I used random hair clips I had to make the photos stand up and appear 3D. I suspended the hands using string on top of my set for symbolic reasons at first to kind of show unity but I really like how it fills the frame and in a lot of the other photographs as well as these they are at an angle that really shows dimension.
